Reliquary with the Relic of a Holy Innocent of Bethlehem, Martyr

An exceptionally rare reliquary containing a relic identified as Ex Costa S. Innocentis Martyris — from the rib of one of the Holy Innocents of Bethlehem, the infant martyrs commemorated by the Church as the first witnesses to Christ.

The relic is preserved within its original circular metal theca and remains accompanied by its original ecclesiastical authentication document dated 15 March 1883. The reverse retains the original episcopal wax seal, attesting to the relic’s integrity and official recognition according to the canonical norms of the Catholic Church.

Dimensions of the reliquary: 4 cm in diameter.
Date of authentication: 15 March 1883.

Among all Christian relics, those associated with the Holy Innocents occupy a unique place. According to the Gospel of Matthew, King Herod, fearing the birth of the Messiah, ordered the massacre of the male children of Bethlehem. Though unable to speak or consciously profess the faith, these innocent children shed their blood because of Christ and are therefore honored by the Church as the first martyrs of the New Covenant.

The Holy Innocents have been venerated since the earliest centuries of Christianity. Their feast has long held a special place in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions, where they are remembered as symbols of purity, innocence, and sacrificial witness. The Church Fathers often described them as blossoms gathered by God at the very dawn of Christ’s earthly life.

Relics attributed to the Holy Innocents are exceptionally uncommon and have historically been preserved with particular reverence. Their association with the Nativity narrative and the earliest martyrdoms connected to the Incarnation has made them objects of profound devotion for centuries.

Ecclesiastical Authentication

The accompanying authentication was issued under the authority of Bishop Filippo Fratellini (Philippus Fratellini), Bishop of Fossombrone in Italy during the nineteenth century.

Bishop Fratellini was entrusted with the ecclesiastical supervision, examination, and authentication of sacred relics within his diocese, ensuring that relics destined for public veneration were properly documented and preserved according to the discipline of the Church.

His official seal and signature on the authentica attest to the recognized provenance of this relic at the time of its certification.

Preserved together with its original authentic document and intact episcopal seal, this reliquary represents a remarkable devotional and historical artifact. It offers a tangible connection to one of the most poignant episodes of the Gospel narrative and to the memory of the Holy Innocents, revered throughout Christendom as the first martyrs who bore witness to Christ by the sacrifice of their lives.
