Saint Basil the Great

Few saints have exercised a greater influence upon Christian theology than Saint Basil the Great (c. 330–379 AD).

Born into one of Christianity's most remarkable holy families in Cappadocia, Basil received the finest classical education available in Caesarea, Constantinople, and Athens, where he formed a lifelong friendship with Saint Gregory Nazianzen. Renouncing a distinguished secular career, he embraced the ascetic life before eventually becoming Bishop of Caesarea, one of the most influential episcopal sees of the Eastern Church.

During the theological struggles of the fourth century, Basil became one of the principal defenders of orthodox Christianity against the Arian heresy. His profound writings on the Holy Trinity played a decisive role in shaping the doctrinal foundations later affirmed by the Second Ecumenical Council.

His contributions extend far beyond theology. Saint Basil established charitable institutions that were unprecedented in the ancient world, founding hospitals, orphanages, homes for the poor, and centers for the care of travelers and the sick. His vast charitable complex near Caesarea became known as the Basileias, one of the earliest organized Christian centers of social care.

As a monastic reformer, Basil composed the Rule of Saint Basil, which remains the foundational guide for Eastern Orthodox monasticism to this day. Nearly every monastery throughout the Byzantine tradition follows spiritual principles derived from his teachings.

His theological works—including On the Holy Spirit, the Hexaemeron, numerous homilies, letters, and ascetical writings—have profoundly shaped both Eastern and Western Christianity for more than sixteen centuries.

Recognizing his immense contribution to Christian doctrine, the Catholic Church honors him as one of the Doctors of the Church, while both Catholics and Orthodox venerate him as one of the greatest Fathers of Christian antiquity.

Throughout the Christian world he is invoked as the patron of:

  • Theologians
  • Bishops
  • Monastic communities
  • Teachers
  • Students
  • Defenders of orthodox doctrine

Cardinal Placidus Zurla

The accompanying authentication bears the authority of Cardinal Placidus (Placido) Zurla, O.S.B. Cam. (1769–1834), one of the most distinguished churchmen and scholars of the early nineteenth century. A member of the Camaldolese Benedictine Order, Cardinal Zurla gained an international reputation as a theologian, historian, geographer, and Oriental scholar. His intellectual achievements led to his appointment as Prefect of the Vatican Library, one of the Holy See's most prestigious scholarly offices, where he supervised one of the world's greatest collections of manuscripts and ecclesiastical treasures.

In 1823, Pope Pius VII created him Cardinal-Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, and he subsequently served as Cardinal Vicar General of Rome, exercising authority over numerous ecclesiastical matters within the Diocese of Rome.

Among his important responsibilities was the supervision and authentication of sacred relics intended for churches, monasteries, chapels, and religious institutions throughout the Catholic world. Documents signed under Cardinal Zurla's authority represent official Roman ecclesiastical recognition and are highly respected among collectors and historians of sacred relics.

The original authentication accompanying this reliquary, dated 1833, confirms that the relic was properly examined, sealed, and approved for public veneration according to the canonical discipline of the Roman Church.
