About Saint Leo the Great

Saint Leo I (c. 400–461 AD), known to history as Leo the Great, served as Pope from 440 to 461 and remains one of the most revered figures in Christian history. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church for his extraordinary theological writings, defense of orthodoxy, and spiritual leadership during one of the most turbulent periods of the Roman Empire.

Saint Leo is especially remembered for:

  • Defending the doctrine of Christ’s divine and human natures at the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD)
  • Strengthening the authority and spiritual primacy of the Papacy
  • Preserving Rome through diplomacy during the invasion of Attila the Hun, whom tradition states he personally persuaded to spare the city
  • His profound sermons and theological writings, still studied by scholars and clergy today

His courage, wisdom, and sanctity earned him the rare title:

“Leo Magnus” — Leo the Great

Saint Leo is honored as a protector of the Church, defender of the faith, and one of the foundational architects of Western Christianity.

About the Ecclesiastical Authentication

The accompanying document is an official authentica issued in Latin and signed in Mediolanum (Milan), 1870, confirming the authenticity and lawful ecclesiastical sealing of the relic according to the prescriptions of the Catholic Church.

The document bears the name and authority of:

Isidorus Augustinus Dechamps
Archbishop of Mechelen
Pontifical Assistant to the Papal Throne
Later Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church

Cardinal Dechamps (1810–1883) was among the most distinguished Catholic churchmen of the nineteenth century. A renowned theologian, preacher, and defender of papal authority, he became Archbishop of Mechelen in Belgium and was elevated to the rank of Cardinal by Pope Pius IX.

He played an important role during the era of the First Vatican Council and was widely respected for his scholarship and unwavering defense of Catholic doctrine during a period of significant political and religious change in Europe.

His signature and episcopal seal greatly enhance the historical and ecclesiastical significance of this relic.
