An exceptionally rare nineteenth-century theca reliquary containing an authenticated relic of Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica, known throughout the Christian world as the Myrrh-streaming Great Martyr (Sanctus Demetrius Thessalonicensis Martyr).

The relic is preserved beneath its original crystal cover within a finely crafted brass theca, resting upon an elaborate silk and gilt paper decoration in the traditional Roman style. The reverse retains its original silk threads and intact episcopal wax seal, confirming that the reliquary has never been opened since its official authentication.

Accompanying the reliquary is its original Authentica, issued in 1852, certifying the relic according to the canonical regulations of the Catholic Church.

Saint Demetrius of Thessalonica

Saint Demetrius († c. 306 AD) is one of the most beloved military saints in both the Eastern and Western Christian traditions. Born into a distinguished Christian family in Thessalonica, he served as a high-ranking Roman officer during the reign of Emperor Maximian.

Rather than persecuting Christians as ordered by the imperial authorities, Demetrius openly confessed Christ and instructed many people in the Christian faith. His courageous witness led to his imprisonment and eventual martyrdom, when Roman soldiers pierced him with spears while he was confined in prison.

Almost immediately after his death, extraordinary miracles began to occur at his tomb. According to ancient Christian tradition, a fragrant, miraculous oil—or myrrh—flowed from his relics, giving rise to his enduring title:

Saint Demetrius the Myrrh-streaming (Myroblyte).

For more than sixteen centuries he has been invoked as the heavenly protector of Thessalonica, soldiers, defenders of the Christian faith, and all who seek courage in times of danger and adversity.

His magnificent basilica in Thessalonica became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations of the Byzantine world, and devotion to Saint Demetrius spread throughout Greece, Italy, the Balkans, Russia, and the entire Christian East.

Relics of Saint Demetrius are exceptionally scarce and have always been regarded with profound reverence, making authenticated examples particularly desirable for important ecclesiastical and private collections.

The Bishop

The accompanying authentication was issued and signed by Bishop Aloysius (Luigi) Carsidoni, Bishop of Fano.

Bishop Carsidoni served the Diocese of Fano during the mid-nineteenth century and was entrusted with the canonical responsibility of examining, authenticating, and sealing sacred relics intended for public veneration. Acting under the authority of the Apostolic See, he carefully verified relics received from recognized ecclesiastical custodians before enclosing them within sealed thecae and issuing official Authentica documents.

His signed authentications are highly respected today because they preserve an uninterrupted ecclesiastical chain of custody and provide documentary evidence of authenticity according to the norms of the Catholic Church.

The original document accompanying this reliquary certifies that the relic was properly identified, enclosed within the present theca, secured with red silk thread, sealed with the bishop's official wax seal, and approved for public veneration.
