Relic of Saint Valentine of Interamna, Bishop and Martyr († 3rd century)
An authenticated 19th-century relic of Saint Valentine of Interamna (modern Terni, Italy), preserved in its original sealed round theca and accompanied by the official Latin document of authentication.
The reliquary measures approximately 4 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in thickness. It is enclosed beneath convex glass within a metal frame. The relic rests upon red silk ground and is identified by the original handwritten cedula:
“S. Valentini Int. Ep.”
(Saint Valentine of Interamna, Bishop)
The reverse retains the intact red wax episcopal seal, secured with silk threads in accordance with canonical regulations established after the Council of Trent. The unbroken seal confirms the integrity of the reliquary since its formal authentication in the 19th century.
This piece combines devotional intimacy with ecclesiastical authenticity, preserving the memory of one of the early Church’s most venerated martyrs.
Saint Valentine of Interamna
Saint Valentine of Interamna was a 3rd-century bishop of the city of Interamna (modern Terni in Umbria). He lived during a time of Roman persecution of Christians and is remembered both as a shepherd of his flock and as a courageous witness to the faith.
Though historical sources from the period are fragmentary, early tradition records that:
He suffered martyrdom during the persecutions under Emperor Aurelian († 275 AD), though some traditions connect his death to earlier imperial hostility toward Christians.
Saint Valentine of Interamna is distinct from the Roman priest Valentine, though over centuries the traditions surrounding various martyrs named Valentine became intertwined. The bishop of Interamna, however, is consistently honored in central Italy as a martyr-bishop whose witness strengthened the early Christian communities.
His cult spread widely in the Middle Ages, and February 14 became associated with his memory. While later popular customs connected his name with romantic love, the historical saint represents something deeper:
He is venerated as Patron of Terni and as a heavenly intercessor for Christian marriage and steadfast love rooted in sacrifice rather than sentiment.
Feast Day: February 14.
The Authenticating Authority
The accompanying Latin document bears the authority of Victor-Auguste-Isidore Cardinal Deschamps (1810–1883), Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium.
Cardinal Deschamps was a prominent 19th-century theologian and church leader. Formerly a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), he became Archbishop of Mechelen in 1867 and was later elevated to the cardinalate.
In accordance with post-Tridentine canonical discipline, relics under his jurisdiction were:
The intact wax seal visible on this reliquary confirms that it has remained unopened since its 19th-century authentication.
Cardinal Deschamps also participated in the First Vatican Council (1869–1870) and was recognized for his defense of Catholic doctrine during a period of political and intellectual upheaval in Europe.
Devotional and Historical Significance
Relics of early martyr-bishops such as Saint Valentine of Interamna embody the apostolic continuity of the Church — the union of pastoral authority and sacrificial witness.
This reliquary preserves:
Compact in size yet profound in historical and spiritual resonance, it reflects both the courage of the early Church and the careful custodianship of relic tradition in the modern era.
