In stockLarge First-Class Relic of Saint Augustine of Hippo, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
+ Original Episcopal Authentica, 1930
An exceptionally impressive ecclesiastical reliquary containing a large first-class relic (ex ossibus) of Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the greatest Fathers and Doctors of the Church.
The substantial fragment of bone is preserved beneath glass within a circular metal theca measuring approximately 4 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in thickness. It rests upon a richly decorated gold-colored textile ground surrounded by an elaborate hand-painted ornamental design bearing the inscription identifying the relic of S. Augustini Episc. D. Ec. — Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church.
The reverse retains its original intact episcopal red wax seal and silk threads, corresponding to the ecclesiastical authentication of the relic.
The reliquary is accompanied by its original episcopal Authentica, issued at Veroli in March 1930, formally recognizing the sacred relic as being ex ossibus S. Augustini Hipponensis Episcopi et Ecclesiae Doctoris — from the bones of Saint Augustine of Hippo, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. The document bears the episcopal signature, official diocesan seal and registration number.
Saint Augustine of Hippo
Saint Augustine (354–430), Bishop of Hippo in North Africa, is one of the most influential theologians and philosophers in the entire history of Christianity. After his celebrated conversion under the spiritual influence of Saint Ambrose of Milan, he became a priest and subsequently Bishop of Hippo.
His monumental writings, particularly the Confessions and The City of God, profoundly shaped Western Christian theology. His teaching on grace, free will, original sin, the Church and the human search for God influenced Christian thought for more than fifteen centuries.
Recognized as one of the Four Great Latin Fathers of the Church and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church, Saint Augustine remains one of the most universally venerated saints of both Western and Eastern Christianity.
A particularly desirable authenticated reliquary, distinguished by the unusually large size of the first-class relic, its beautiful original presentation, intact episcopal sealing and surviving 1930 ecclesiastical documentation.
