She accepted martyrdom together with her husband during the reign of Emperor Nero. During a festival in honor of the Hellenic goddess Artemis, a crowd of citizens seized Philemon and Apphia in the church, as well as the head of the local Christian community, Archippus. For refusing to take part in the pagan celebrations, Archippus was slashed with knives and died on the spot. The mayor Artoclis sentenced Philemon and Apphia to lapidation (stoning to death). Archippus and Philemon were canonized as holy apostles, and Apphia was numbered among the equal-to-the-apostles.
