Reliquary-Sarcophagus with the Relics of Saint Martin I, Pope and Martyr

Rome, early 19th century

A rare and exceptional monumental altar reliquary-sarcophagus, richly gilded and exquisitely carved, containing the nearly complete relics - body (ex ossibus) of Saint Martin I (†655 AD), Supreme Pontiff and Martyr of the early Church.

The reliquary impresses with its grand dimensions and superb craftsmanship: made of carved and gilded wood with architectural framing, scrollwork, cherub heads, and glass panels on all sides, allowing for a complete view of the sacred contents. The relics rest on their original gold brocade cushion; the skull is adorned with a silver martyr’s crown set with stones, while the bones are carefully wrapped in silk and secured with decorative braid.

Accompanying this extraordinary work are two original episcopal authentication documents (1832 and 1833), signed and sealed by Cardinal Placido Zurla (1769–1834), Vicar General of His Holiness the Pope and Governor of Rome, confirming the discovery of the ancient tomb of Saint Martin I and the subsequent authentication and sealing of his holy relics.

Dimensions:

Height: 150 cm

Base: 83 × 57 cm

Weight: approx. 80 kg

Condition:
The reliquary has undergone a meticulous professional restoration, including cleaning of the gilding, replacement of one glass panel with a historically accurate reproduction, and preservation of the interior silk. The episcopal seals and threads remain intact.

Provenance:
Private ecclesiastical collection with complete episcopal documentation.

Significance:
The relics of Saint Martin I, Pope from 649 to 655 AD, represent one of the rarest and most significant treasures of the early papacy in private hands. A zealous defender of orthodoxy, Martin I opposed the Monothelite heresy, for which he was abducted to Constantinople, condemned, and sentenced to imprisonment and death. He is venerated as a martyr for the faith, and his relics are virtually never encountered outside the Vatican.

This reliquary, with its nearly complete remains and impeccable documentation, ranks among the most important papal relics to appear on the market in recent decades — a sacred object of exceptional historical, artistic, and religious value, ideally suited for a major museum, cathedral treasury, or distinguished private collection.

✨ A masterpiece of sacred art and a relic of the early papacy of the highest rarity.

⚜️ Possibility to acquire the Relics alone, without the reliquary.
