An impressive ecclesiastical reliquary containing a large first-class relic (ex ossibus) of Saint Lawrence of Rome, one of the most celebrated martyrs of the early Church and one of the seven deacons of Rome.

The substantial fragment of bone is preserved beneath glass within a circular metal theca measuring approximately 3.5 cm in diameter and 1.2 cm in thickness, upon an elegant gold-colored textile ground. The original cedula identifies the relic as S. Laurentii M. — Saint Lawrence, Martyr.

Saint Lawrence of Rome

Saint Lawrence was a deacon of Pope Saint Sixtus II and was martyred at Rome in AD 258, during the persecution of Emperor Valerian. According to ancient Christian tradition, Lawrence was entrusted with the care of the Church’s treasury and the poor of Rome. His courage and martyrdom made him one of the most widely venerated saints of Christianity, and his name is included in the Roman Canon of the Mass.

The reverse retains the original episcopal red wax seal and silk threads, remaining associated with the accompanying original Episcopal Authentica, issued at Veroli on 20 August 1925. The document formally recognizes the sacred remains as ex ossibus Sancti Laurentii Romani, Diaconi et Martyris and bears the signature and official seal of the Bishop of Veroli.

A particularly desirable authenticated reliquary, distinguished by the large and clearly visible first-class relic, its intact episcopal sealing and surviving original ecclesiastical documentation.
