Monumental Altar Reliquary of Saint Eugene of Trebizond, Martyr

This imposing altar reliquary, masterfully handcrafted from mahogany with refined metal elements and inlaid decorative details, is a striking testament to late‑19th‑century Catholic devotion and sacred artistry. Designed in a vertical altar format and crowned by a finely modeled crucifix, the reliquary commands both visual and spiritual presence.

The Relic

At its heart, protected behind glass and set against a rich crimson textile ground, rests an exceptionally large relic identified by its original handwritten label as:

“ex oss. S.ti Eugenii Trapezuntii M.”
(From the bones of Saint Eugene of Trebizond, Martyr)

The relic itself is dramatically displayed, adorned with traditional metallic threads and devotional ornamentation, emphasizing both its authenticity and its importance within the cult of saints.

Saint Eugene of Trebizond

Saint Eugene is the patron saint of Trebizond (modern Trabzon, Turkey) and one of the most venerated early Christian martyrs of Asia Minor. Martyred during the Roman persecutions, likely in the late 3rd or early 4th century, Saint Eugene became a powerful symbol of steadfast faith and spiritual protection for the city and the wider Christian East.

His cult spread widely in both Eastern and Western Christianity, and relics associated with him were highly revered, especially those of significant size, such as the one preserved here.

Ecclesiastical Authentication — Belgium, 1899

The reliquary is accompanied by its original illuminated ecclesiastical document of authentication, issued in 1899 and bearing official seals and signatures. The document was authorized under the authority of:

Pierre‑Lambert Goossens

Cardinal Goossens served as Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium, one of the most influential Catholic offices in the country at the time. Documents issued under his primatial authority carry exceptional historical and ecclesiastical weight, confirming that the relic was examined, authenticated, sealed, and approved for public veneration in accordance with Canon Law.

The wax seals visible on the reliquary itself correspond to this authentication, ensuring the relic has remained unopened and intact since the time of certification.
