Original Roman Episcopal Authentica, 1846

An exceptional 19th-century reliquary containing substantial first-class relics (ex ossibus) of the Three Holy Magi — Saints Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, the Three Wise Men who, according to the Gospel of Matthew, journeyed from the East to Bethlehem to adore the newborn Christ and offered Him the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Venerated from the earliest centuries of Christianity, the Magi came to be regarded in Western Christian tradition as three kings, representing the nations of the world coming to recognize Christ. Medieval tradition gave them the names Caspar (Gaspar), Melchior and Balthasar, and their veneration became especially important throughout Europe.

Their principal shrine is traditionally associated with the celebrated Shrine of the Three Kings in Cologne Cathedral, one of the great pilgrimage destinations of medieval Christendom.

The present reliquary is particularly remarkable in preserving relics of all three Magi together in a single theca. Three distinct bone fragments are arranged individually and identified by their original handwritten cedulae for Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.

The oval metal theca measures approximately 4 × 3 cm and retains its original arrangement beneath glass. On the reverse are preserved the original red silk threads and episcopal wax seal, corresponding to the accompanying ecclesiastical document.

The reliquary is accompanied by its original Roman Authentica, dated 8 January 1846, issued under the authority of Archbishop Stephanus Missir, Titular Archbishop of Irenopolis.

Of particular importance, the document states that he acted by special faculty granted by Pope Gregory XVI, giving the ensemble a direct connection with the ecclesiastical authority of Rome during his pontificate.

The Authentica specifically records and authenticates relics of the Three Holy Magi — Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar, and corresponds to the sealed reliquary preserved with it.

A rare and historically significant complete devotional ensemble, distinguished by the substantial size of the three first-class relics, their individual identification, the survival of the original episcopal sealing, and especially the preservation of the original Roman Authentica of 1846.
