In stockMonumental Gilded Reliquary Frame with Relics of the Great Fathers of the Church and Apostles to the Slavs
Containing the Holy Relics of Pope Saint Gregory I the Great, Pope Saint Sylvester I, and Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal-to-the-Apostles, Bishops, Confessors and Patrons of Europe
Accompanied by an original episcopal authentication document, dated 1792.
This extraordinary gilded wall-mounted reliquary frame represents a masterpiece of late 18th-century ecclesiastical art, both majestic in scale and breathtaking in detail. Measuring 73 cm x 59 cm with a depth of 10 cm, it is an object of profound sacred, historic, and artistic value.
The reliquary houses the precious relics of four towering figures of Christianity:
Pope Saint Gregory I (the Great) — Doctor of the Church, reformer of the liturgy, Father of Western monasticism, and one of the most venerated pontiffs of all time.
Pope Saint Sylvester I — the pope who guided the Church during the reign of Constantine the Great, associated with the First Council of Nicaea and the triumph of Christianity over persecution.
Saints Cyril and Methodius — the great missionaries, Bishops of Thessalonica, revered as Equal-to-the-Apostles for their evangelization of the Slavic peoples, creators of the Glagolitic alphabet, and Patrons of Europe.
The relics are magnificently arranged within a luxurious baroque-gilded wooden frame, richly decorated with polychrome silk embroidery, gilt wire, and set with stones, forming an intricate floral and symbolic composition. At the center, a large bone reliquary is exalted with radiant ornaments, surrounded by further relics carefully identified by original handwritten labels.
Accompanying this relic shrine is a highly important document of authentication, issued in Rome in 1792 by Cardinal Marcus Antonius, Vicar General of His Holiness the Pope. The document bears the episcopal seal and signature, certifying the relics as authentic and duly sealed. The reverse of the reliquary retains its original sealing wax impressions, untouched since the 18th century.
Historical and Spiritual Importance
This reliquary embodies a convergence of the greatest traditions of the Catholic Church:
The papal legacy of Rome, represented by Gregory the Great and Sylvester I.
The evangelization of the Slavic world through Saints Cyril and Methodius, honored as Apostles to the Slavs and proclaimed Patrons of Europe by Pope John Paul II.
Such a combination of relics is virtually unprecedented, making this reliquary not only a devotional treasure but also an artifact of European cultural history.
Condition
The reliquary remains in remarkable condition for its age. The gilding retains much of its original brilliance, the silk and metal embroidery are intact, and the sealing threads and episcopal wax seals remain unbroken, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of the relics.
Provenance
Authenticated by Cardinal Marcus Antonius, 1792 (with original Latin episcopal certificate).
Preserved in a private ecclesiastical collection.
