Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon
Saint Euphemia was one of the most illustrious martyrs of the Great Persecution under Emperor Diocletian at the beginning of the fourth century.
Born into a noble Christian family in Chalcedon, near Constantinople, she openly professed her faith when imperial authorities demanded sacrifices to pagan gods. Refusing to renounce Christ, she was subjected to imprisonment, torture, and repeated attempts to force her apostasy.
According to ancient Christian tradition, Euphemia endured numerous torments with extraordinary courage and serenity. Neither threats nor suffering could shake her faith. Ultimately, she received the crown of martyrdom around the year 303 AD, becoming one of the most beloved saints of the early Church.
Her steadfast witness quickly inspired widespread devotion throughout the Christian world, and magnificent basilicas were erected over her tomb.
The Miracle of the Council of Chalcedon
Saint Euphemia occupies a unique place in Christian history because of her connection to the Council of Chalcedon (451 AD), one of the most important Ecumenical Councils of the Church.
Ancient accounts record that the bishops gathered at Chalcedon placed two written professions of faith within Saint Euphemia’s shrine—one expressing orthodox Christological doctrine and the other representing the Monophysite position.
When the shrine was reopened, the document affirming the orthodox faith was found in Saint Euphemia’s hands, while the opposing text lay at her feet.
This event was regarded throughout Christian antiquity as a miraculous confirmation of the doctrine proclaimed by the Council: that Christ is one divine Person in two complete natures, divine and human.
Because of this miracle, Saint Euphemia became a powerful symbol of orthodoxy and fidelity to the true faith.
Veneration Through the Centuries
The relics of Saint Euphemia became among the most revered in the Christian East.
Pilgrims journeyed from throughout the Byzantine Empire to venerate her shrine, and emperors, patriarchs, bishops, and countless faithful sought her intercession.
She is honored as:
Her feast continues to be celebrated throughout both Eastern and Western Christian traditions.
