Relic of Saint Stephen, Protomartyr of the Church

An authentic 19th-century relic of Saint Stephen the Protomartyr, preserved in its original sealed theca and accompanied by its ecclesiastical authentication document.

The sacred particle is reverently enclosed within a traditional round metal theca measuring 4 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in thickness, protected under glass. The relic rests upon a silk ground and is identified by the original Latin cedula inscribed “S. Stephani Prot. M.” — Sancti Stephani Protomartyris.

The reverse retains its intact red wax episcopal seal, impressed with the coat of arms of the issuing ecclesiastical authority, confirming canonical closure in accordance with the norms of the Church.

Saint Stephen the Protomartyr (1st Century)

Saint Stephen holds a unique and exalted place in Christian history as the first martyr of the Church. His life and death are recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6–7).

Chosen as one of the first seven deacons to assist the Apostles in charitable ministry, Stephen was distinguished by his wisdom, eloquence, and profound faith. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he boldly proclaimed Christ before the Sanhedrin, delivering a powerful defense of the Gospel that traced salvation history from Abraham to Christ.

His fearless testimony led to his condemnation and execution by stoning outside Jerusalem. As he was being martyred, Stephen prayed for his persecutors with words echoing those of Christ:

"Lord, do not hold this sin against them."

Among those present at his martyrdom was Saul of Tarsus — later Saint Paul — whose conversion would transform the history of Christianity.

Saint Stephen’s martyrdom represents the first shedding of blood for Christ after the Resurrection and marks the beginning of the Church’s long witness through suffering. He is honored as the patron of deacons and is invoked as a model of courage, forgiveness, and unwavering fidelity to the truth.

His feast is celebrated on December 26 in the Western Church.

The Ecclesiastical Authority

The accompanying authentica bears the official seal and signature of the issuing bishop or cardinal, whose red wax seal secures the relic in accordance with canonical requirements of the period.

In the 19th century, the authentication and distribution of relics were governed by strict ecclesiastical norms. The document certifies that the relic was examined, enclosed in a sealed theca, bound with silk thread, and impressed with the episcopal seal to prevent tampering. Such documentation ensures the relic’s provenance and legitimacy within the devotional and canonical traditions of the Catholic Church.

The seal visible on the reverse corresponds to the coat of arms of the issuing prelate, providing both historical and institutional context to the relic’s authentication.

This relic represents a profound connection to the earliest era of Christianity — to the very first witness who gave his life for Christ. It is both a devotional treasure and a historical object rooted in apostolic tradition and the Church’s enduring reverence for her martyrs.
