Reliquary of Saint John Climacus (John of the Ladder)

+ Episcopal Authentication Document, dated 1880

This sacred object is a devotional reliquary containing an authenticated relic of Saint John Climacus, one of the most influential ascetic saints of the Christian East. The relic is housed within an elegant circular reliquary of the late 19th century, carefully crafted and sealed according to ecclesiastical norms.

The reliquary has a diameter of approximately 4 cm and is designed for private devotion. The relic is mounted on a textile ground, clearly labeled “S. Ioannis Clim. Mon.”, identifying Saint John Climacus as a monk. The reverse is sealed with red ecclesiastical wax bearing the official episcopal seal, ensuring the integrity and authenticity of the relic.

The Saint

Saint John Climacus (c. 579–649), also known as John of the Ladder, was a monk and abbot of Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai. He is revered as one of the greatest spiritual writers in Christian history and is the author of the famous ascetical treatise “The Ladder of Divine Ascent”, a work that describes thirty stages of spiritual growth toward union with God.

His teachings profoundly shaped Eastern Orthodox spirituality and were also widely respected in the Western Church. Saint John Climacus is commemorated especially during Lent, as his writings emphasize repentance, humility, obedience, and divine love.

The Episcopal Authentication

The reliquary is accompanied by an original Latin authentication document dated 1880, issued and signed by a Catholic bishop vested with apostolic authority. The document formally certifies that:

  • the relic was extracted from an authentic and approved source,
  • it was properly identified,
  • it was placed reverently into the reliquary,
  • and it was sealed with episcopal wax and silk threads, in accordance with canonical law.

Such documents were mandatory for the public or private veneration of relics and represent an essential guarantee of authenticity. The presence of this intact document significantly enhances the historical, devotional, and collectible value of the reliquary.

Significance

This reliquary represents a rare and museum-quality devotional object, combining:

  • an authenticated relic of a major saint of universal Christianity,
  • original 19th-century ecclesiastical documentation,
  • and traditional craftsmanship faithful to canonical requirements.

It stands as a tangible witness to Christian monastic spirituality and the enduring veneration of Saint John Climacus across both Eastern and Western Christian traditions.
