Sterling Silver Reliquary, 1886
An exceptional sterling silver reliquary containing two remarkably large first-class relics (ex ossibus) of Saint Ludmila of Bohemia, Martyr, and her grandson Saint Wenceslaus (Václav), Duke of Bohemia and Martyr.
The substantial bone fragments are preserved beneath crystal in their original ecclesiastical arrangement and identified by their Latin cedulae, S. Ludmilae M. and S. Wenceslai M. The reliquary remains secured with its original red silk threads and episcopal wax seal.
It is accompanied by the original Authentica dated 1886, issued and personally signed by Pietro Paolo Trucchi, Bishop of Forlì, a prelate of the Papal Household and Assistant at the Pontifical Throne. The document formally authenticates both sacred relics and records their placement in this silver reliquary.
Saint Ludmila, one of the earliest Christian martyrs of Bohemia, was the grandmother and spiritual mentor of Saint Wenceslaus, the revered Duke and principal patron saint of the Czech lands.
Their relics preserved together in such unusually substantial fragments make this an especially rare and historically significant devotional ensemble.
