Gilt Theca Reliquary with the Relics of Three Great Holy Unmercenary Healers Gilt Theca Reliquary with the Relics of Three Great Holy Unmercenary Healers Saint Pantaleon the Great Martyr, Saint Cyrus of Alexandria, and Saint John of Alexandria

Original Episcopal Authentication – 1854

An exceptional gilt brass theca reliquary preserving remarkably large relics of three of Christianity's most beloved physician-saints and martyrs: Saint Pantaleon, Saint Cyrus of Alexandria, and Saint John of Alexandria. The relics are housed beneath glass against a rich crimson silk background, each identified by its original Latin cedula.

Unlike the small particles usually encountered in portable thecae, this example contains unusually large bone fragments, making it a particularly impressive devotional object. The reverse remains sealed with the original silk threads and intact episcopal wax seal, preserving its historical integrity.

The reliquary is accompanied by its original Authentica dated 19 November 1854, confirming the authenticity of the relics and their authorization for public veneration.

The Saints Saint Pantaleon

Saint Pantaleon (†305) is one of the most celebrated physician-martyrs of the early Church and one of the revered Fourteen Holy Helpers. Born in Nicomedia, he was trained as a physician before embracing Christianity through the influence of the priest Hermolaus.

After dedicating his medical knowledge entirely to the service of Christ, Pantaleon became famous for healing the sick without accepting payment, earning the title of one of the Holy Unmercenary Physicians. During the persecution of Emperor Diocletian he endured numerous tortures before finally being beheaded. His cult rapidly spread throughout both East and West, and he remains one of the principal patron saints of physicians, surgeons, hospitals, and all who seek healing through faith.

Saint Cyrus of Alexandria

Saint Cyrus was a distinguished physician from Alexandria in Egypt who abandoned worldly success to embrace the ascetic life. He practiced medicine entirely without charge, combining physical treatment with prayer and leading many people to Christianity through his charity and miraculous healings.

During the persecutions under Diocletian, Cyrus courageously strengthened imprisoned Christians in their faith. He was eventually arrested together with Saint John and suffered martyrdom for refusing to renounce Christ. Throughout Christian history he has been invoked as one of the great heavenly patrons of physicians and those suffering from illness.

Saint John of Alexandria

Saint John, traditionally known as the companion of Saint Cyrus, was a former Roman soldier who joined Cyrus in encouraging persecuted Christians. Together they comforted imprisoned believers and openly professed their Christian faith despite the threat of execution.

Following severe torture, both saints were martyred together around the year 311. From antiquity onward, Saints Cyrus and John have been venerated jointly throughout both the Eastern and Western Churches, especially as miraculous healers whose intercession brought countless cures. Numerous churches were dedicated to them, particularly in Egypt, Rome, and Constantinople.

The Bishop

The accompanying authentication bears the signature and seal of Bishop Aloysius (Luigi) Carsidoni, Bishop of Fano, Italy.

Bishop Carsidoni served the Diocese of Fano during the mid-nineteenth century and was entrusted with one of the Church's most important canonical responsibilities: the examination, authentication, sealing, and authorization of sacred relics intended for public veneration. Acting according to the norms of the Holy See, he carefully verified relics originating from approved ecclesiastical sources before issuing official Authentica documents bearing his signature and episcopal seal.

His authentications remain highly respected by collectors, museums, and ecclesiastical institutions because they preserve an unbroken historical chain linking the relics to their recognized ecclesiastical custodians. The original document accompanying this reliquary certifies that these sacred relics were examined, enclosed within the present gilt theca, secured with silk thread, sealed with the bishop's official wax seal, and approved for public veneration.
