Description

This rare and highly venerated silver reliquary contains an exceptionally important cranial relic (ex cranio) of Saint John of Nepomuk, one of the most revered martyr-saints of Central Europe and a universal symbol of the inviolability of confession.

The relic is preserved beneath glass on a traditional silk ground and remains canonically sealed, secured with original red silk cords and an intact wax seal, guaranteeing that it has never been opened since ecclesiastical authentication.

The reliquary is accompanied by its original Latin authentication document, issued in 1897, confirming the authenticity and lawful translation of the relic. The document bears the authority of the Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium, acting under cardinalatial mandate, ensuring full compliance with Canon Law.

The Saint Saint John of Nepomuk (c. 1345–1393)

Saint John of Nepomuk was a Bohemian priest and martyr, venerated as the patron saint of confessors, bridges, and protection against slander.

According to tradition, he served as confessor to Queen Sophia of Bavaria, wife of King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. When the king demanded that John reveal the contents of the queen’s confession, the saint refused, choosing martyrdom rather than violating the seal of confession. He was subsequently tortured and drowned in the Vltava River in Prague.

He was canonized in 1729 and rapidly became one of the most widely venerated saints in Europe, especially in Bohemia, Austria, Bavaria, and the Low Countries. Cranial relics of Saint John of Nepomuk are exceptionally rare and particularly revered, due to the symbolic association of the head with his silence and fidelity.

The Authenticating Cardinal Gustave-Joseph Goossens (1827–1906)

Cardinal Goossens served as Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium, holding the highest ecclesiastical authority in the Belgian Church. Relics authenticated under his jurisdiction represent the highest level of episcopal and cardinalatial oversight.

Documents issued under his authority:

  • Confirm the relic’s lawful origin and canonical authenticity
  • Guarantee adherence to strict Church regulations governing relics
  • Were intended for public veneration and devotional use

Relics accompanied by original documentation and intact seals from this period are increasingly rare and highly valued.
