Exceptional Reliquary of the Head of Saint Theodosia of Tyre Also Known as Theodosia of Caesarea or Theodosia of Palestine Rare Monumental Neo-Gothic Shrine Containing a Relic of the Virgin Martyr of Palestine, Accompanied by an Authentic Issued Under the Authority of a Cardinal, Vicar General of the Pope

A rare and highly significant reliquary containing a relic identified as belonging to the Head of Saint Theodosia of Tyre, Virgin and Martyr, one of the most revered female saints of the early Church and among the heroic witnesses of the Great Persecution under Emperor Diocletian.

The relic is preserved within an impressive monumental Neo-Gothic reliquary shrine executed in gilded wood and glass, designed in the form of a miniature Gothic chapel. Resting upon crimson velvet and surrounded by richly ornamented liturgical decorations, the relic occupies a place of honor beneath an architectural canopy inspired by medieval cathedral design.

Accompanying the reliquary is its original ecclesiastical authentication document issued in Rome under the authority of Cardinal La Valletta, Cardinal and Vicar General of the Pope.

Relics associated with Saint Theodosia are exceptionally rare, and examples specifically identified as deriving from the saint's head are seldom encountered outside historic ecclesiastical collections.

Saint Theodosia of Tyre

Saint Theodosia of Tyre, also known as Theodosia of Caesarea or Theodosia of Palestine, was a young Christian virgin who suffered martyrdom during the final and most violent persecutions of Christians in the early fourth century.

According to ancient Christian tradition, Theodosia was a noble and devout young woman of extraordinary courage. During the persecutions ordered by Emperor Diocletian and continued under Galerius, she approached a group of imprisoned Christians awaiting execution and openly encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith.

For this act she was immediately arrested by Roman authorities. Refusing to renounce Christ, despite her youth and the threats of torture, she endured severe suffering with remarkable fortitude. Ancient accounts describe how she was subjected to brutal torments before ultimately receiving the crown of martyrdom around the year 307 AD.

Her heroic witness made a profound impression upon the early Church. The historian Eusebius of Caesarea, who lived during her lifetime and recorded the persecutions in Palestine, preserved the memory of her martyrdom, making Saint Theodosia one of the best-known female martyrs of the era.

For centuries she has been honored as a symbol of purity, courage, unwavering faith, and spiritual victory over earthly persecution. Her feast is celebrated in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions, where she is venerated as Virgin and Martyr.

Because of her antiquity and her close connection to the earliest centuries of Christianity, authenticated relics of Saint Theodosia have always been regarded with particular reverence by collectors, historians, and ecclesiastical institutions.

The Reliquary

The reliquary itself is an impressive work of devotional art. Its Gothic architectural form recalls the shrines and reliquaries of medieval Europe, while the glass enclosure allows the relic to remain visible for contemplation and veneration.

Particularly noteworthy are:

  • Monumental Neo-Gothic architectural design.
  • Large display format intended for chapel or private oratory use.
  • Original ecclesiastical authentication from Rome.
  • Association with Cardinal La Valletta, Cardinal and Vicar General of the Pope.
  • Extremely rare dedication to Saint Theodosia of Tyre.
  • Relic identified as deriving from the saint's head.
  • Outstanding devotional, historical, and collector significance.

A Rare Witness of the Age of the Martyrs

Objects associated with the earliest Christian martyrs possess a unique spiritual and historical resonance. Saint Theodosia belongs to that heroic generation of believers who gave their lives during the final great persecutions before Christianity emerged from the catacombs to become the faith of the Roman Empire.

Combining exceptional rarity, documented Roman provenance, remarkable size, and striking Neo-Gothic craftsmanship, this reliquary stands as an extraordinary testament to the memory of one of the most courageous virgin martyrs of the early Church and represents a centerpiece worthy of the finest ecclesiastical, museum, or private collection.
