Large First-Class Relic of Saint Dominic

Saint Dominic, Confessor and Founder of the Order of Preachers

Large Relic from the Rib — Original Episcopal Authentica, Mechelen, 1883

An exceptional 19th-century ecclesiastical reliquary containing a large first-class relic of Saint Dominic (1170–1221), founder of the Dominican Order and one of the great saints of the medieval Church.

The substantial bone fragment is identified in the original ecclesiastical Authentica as “ex ossibus de Costa Sancti Dominici Confessoris” — a relic taken from the rib of Saint Dominic. Its unusually large size is particularly impressive for a portable theca.

The relic is preserved beneath glass within an elegant circular metal reliquary, approximately 4 cm in diameter and 1.2 cm thick, retaining its historical arrangement and identification.

Of particular importance is the accompanying original Authentica dated 25 September 1883 and issued at Mechelen (Malines), Belgium, under the authority of the Cardinal Archbishop and Primate of Belgium. The document bears the archiepiscopal arms and official ecclesiastical authentication corresponding to the intact red wax seal preserved on the reverse of the reliquary.

A particularly desirable documented relic combining an unusually substantial portion of the rib of Saint Dominic, intact episcopal sealing, and its original 1883 Belgian ecclesiastical certificate.
