Monumental Gothic Brass Charger with Crucifixion

Ecclesiastical Art – Early Gothic Tradition (14th–15th Century, Attributed)

A monumental and exceptionally powerful brass charger depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, executed in a style deeply rooted in the early Gothic sculptural tradition.

At the center, Christ is rendered in a hieratic and elongated form upon the cross, accompanied by mourning figures traditionally identified as the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Above, angels attend the scene, reinforcing the theological narrative of sacrifice and redemption. The composition is enclosed within a richly ornamented Gothic border featuring medallions of saints or apostles, interwoven with a continuous Latin inscription of devotional character.

The formal qualities of the piece — including the elongated proportions, restrained anatomical modeling, and symbolic abstraction — are closely aligned with ecclesiastical metalwork of the 14th and 15th centuries. The overall design reflects the transition from Romanesque rigidity to early Gothic expressiveness, suggesting a liturgical or ceremonial function.

Details:

  • Material: Cast brass / bronze
  • Diameter: approx. 40 cm
  • Origin: Continental Europe

  Condition:

Well-preserved with an attractive aged surface and patina. Evidence of historical use, minor surface wear, and irregularities consistent with traditional casting techniques. Structurally sound.

Large-scale chargers of this nature are rare survivals and are often associated with ecclesiastical or monastic settings. Their scale and iconographic complexity indicate a significant decorative or devotional role.

A compelling and museum-worthy example of Gothic religious metalwork, combining strong sculptural presence with profound historical and spiritual resonance.
