Bishop and Martyr, with Episcopal Authentication, 1838
A rare and precious devotional treasure: a finely wrought sterling silver reliquary housing a substantial relic ex ossibus (from the bones) of St. Blaise of Sebaste, the holy bishop and martyr, venerated as the miraculous healer of throat ailments and one of the most beloved saints of the early Church.
The reliquary, measuring 3 × 2.5 cm, is crafted in a refined oval form with baroque-style decoration. The relic is mounted against a deep red silk ground, identified by its original manuscript label Blasii Seb. Ep. M. (Sancti Blasii Sebastensis Episcopi et Martyris). The reverse is secured with its intact red wax episcopal seal and threads.
Accompanied by its original episcopal authentication document, issued in 1838 by Archbishop Aloysius (Moses) Cardelli in Rome, confirming the sacred provenance of this relic.
This reliquary is not only a devotional object of profound spiritual significance but also a remarkable piece of 19th-century ecclesiastical heritage, carrying with it centuries of veneration of one of Christianity’s most revered martyrs.
