Silver Reliquary with Relics (ex ossibus) of Saint Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus) Doctor of the Church – Bishop of Regensburg

With original episcopal authentication document, Bari, 1951

Dimensions: 3 × 2.5 cm

This exquisite silver reliquary (theca) preserves a sacred fragment ex ossibus—from the bones—of Saint Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus), one of the most extraordinary intellects and saints in the history of the Catholic Church. The reliquary is finely crafted in silver, with a glazed opening revealing the relic and its traditional handwritten identification label. Its compact size reflects its intended use for private devotion rather than public exposition.

The reliquary is accompanied by an original ecclesiastical authentication document dated 1951, issued under the authority of the Archbishop of Bari. The document confirms the authenticity of the relic, records its canonical sealing with wax and thread, and attests to its lawful transmission according to Church norms. Such documentation greatly enhances both the historical and devotional value of the reliquary.

Saint Albert the Great (c. 1200–1280)

Known as Albertus Magnus (“Albert the Great”), he was a Dominican friar, bishop, philosopher, theologian, and one of the most universal minds of the Middle Ages. He was appointed Bishop of Regensburg, though he later resigned the office to return to teaching and writing—an act reflecting his humility and devotion to learning.

Saint Albert is especially revered as:

  • Doctor of the Church (declared in 1931)
  • Patron saint of scientists, natural philosophers, and students
  • One of the greatest teachers of Saint Thomas Aquinas

What sets Albert apart is his extraordinary effort to reconcile faith and reason. At a time when Aristotle’s works were largely unknown or mistrusted in Western Europe, Albert systematically studied, commented on, and integrated them into Christian theology—without compromising doctrine. His writings span theology, philosophy, botany, zoology, mineralogy, chemistry, astronomy, and alchemy, earning him the rare title Doctor Universalis.

Despite legends portraying him as a magician or alchemist, the Church venerates him as a model of intellectual honesty, scientific curiosity, and deep sanctity. His life demonstrates that the study of nature can lead not away from God, but toward Him.

Spiritual and Historical Significance

Relics of Saint Albert the Great are especially meaningful for scholars, theologians, educators, and those who seek harmony between scientific inquiry and Christian belief. This reliquary, with its verified provenance and episcopal documentation, represents not only a sacred object of devotion but also a tangible link to one of the Church’s greatest minds.

A rare and refined devotional artifact—uniting faith, reason, history, and sanctity in a single, beautifully preserved reliquary.
