Reliquary of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Sterling Silver

with Episcopal Authentication (1859)

This finely crafted 19th-century sterling silver reliquary contains a relic of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most venerated virgin martyrs of the early Christian Church. The reliquary measures 3.5 × 3 cm and is of museum quality, both in material and devotional integrity.

The relic is housed beneath a protective glass panel and mounted on a traditional silk ground. It is secured with original red silk threads and closed with an intact episcopal wax seal, bearing the armorial impression of the authenticating prelate. The presence of the unbroken seal confirms that the reliquary has not been opened since its official ecclesiastical verification.

Ecclesiastical Authentication (1859)

The accompanying authentic document (authentica) was issued in 1859 and formally certifies the relic according to canonical norms of the Roman Catholic Church. The document was signed and sealed by Cardinal Constantine Patrizi Naro (Constantinus Patrizi Naro), who at the time served as:

  • Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church
  • Patriarchal Vicar of Rome
  • Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria Maggiore
  • One of the highest ecclesiastical authorities responsible for the authentication of sacred relics

Cardinal Patrizi was renowned for his strict adherence to Church law regarding relics. His signature and seal attest that the relic was examined, recognized as authentic, and lawfully approved for public veneration. Such documentation places this object firmly within official Church provenance and significantly enhances its historical and devotional value.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria

Saint Catherine of Alexandria (4th century) is among the Fourteen Holy Helpers and one of the greatest female saints of Christendom. According to ancient tradition, she was a noblewoman of extraordinary learning who converted to Christianity and publicly defended the faith before pagan philosophers summoned by Emperor Maxentius.

Unable to defeat her wisdom, the authorities condemned her to death. After the miraculous destruction of the spiked wheel intended for her execution, she was ultimately martyred by beheading. Angels are said to have carried her body to Mount Sinai, where her cult flourished for centuries.

Saint Catherine is revered as the patroness of:

  • Scholars and philosophers
  • Students and universities
  • Young women
  • Apologists and theologians

Her symbol, the wheel, remains one of the most recognizable emblems in Christian iconography.
