Reliquary with a Relic of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus - Doctor of the Church, Cappadocian Father, Sterling Silver Reliquary

+ Episcopal Authentication

Description of the Relic

This finely crafted sterling silver reliquary contains a relic of Saint Gregory of Nazianzus, also known as Gregory the Theologian or Gregory Nazianzen. The relic is preserved within a traditional oval reliquary, secured according to canonical norms, and sealed with red ecclesiastical wax bearing the official episcopal seal, indicating its authenticity and proper ecclesiastical custody.

The interior presentation reflects classical 19th-century Catholic reliquary practice: the relic is mounted on a silk ground, framed with decorative metallic thread, and identified by an original handwritten Latin label. The reliquary is complete, intact, and suitable for devotional, scholarly, or museum display.

Material:

  • Sterling silver

Dimensions:

  • 3 × 2.5 cm

Condition:

  • Excellent for its age, with original seal preserved

Episcopal Authentication Document

The relic is accompanied by an original episcopal authentication document, issued and signed by a Catholic bishop, formally attesting to the authenticity of the relic. Such documents (authenticae) were mandatory under canon law and confirm that:

  • the relic was taken from an approved and authentic source,
  • it was properly identified and enclosed in a sealed reliquary,
  • it was authorized for public veneration within churches, chapels, or private oratories.

The document bears the bishop’s signature, ecclesiastical titles, and embossed seal, providing clear provenance and historical legitimacy. This documentation significantly enhances both the devotional and scholarly value of the relic.

About the Bishop Who Certified the Relic

The certifying bishop belonged to the hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church, acting with delegated authority from the Holy See. Bishops entrusted with issuing relic authentications were responsible for safeguarding doctrinal integrity and ensuring compliance with post-Tridentine regulations on relic veneration.

Such bishops were often titular archbishops or high-ranking clerics connected to the Roman Curia or major dioceses, and their seals served as a legal and spiritual guarantee of authenticity. Relics bearing intact episcopal seals and documents are increasingly rare and highly valued.

About Saint Gregory of Nazianzus (c. 329–390)

Saint Gregory of Nazianzus is one of the most important theologians in Christian history and is revered as:

  • Doctor of the Church
  • Cappadocian Father (alongside St Basil the Great and St Gregory of Nyssa)
  • Ecumenical Teacher of the Faith

He served briefly as Archbishop of Constantinople and was instrumental in defending the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, especially against Arianism. His theological orations earned him the unique title “The Theologian”, a distinction shared by only one other saint in Christian tradition (St John the Evangelist).

Gregory’s writings deeply influenced both Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic theology, and he is venerated universally across Christian traditions. His feast day is celebrated on January 25 in the Roman Catholic Church.

Significance

This reliquary represents a rare and museum-quality devotional artifact, uniting:

  • a relic of one of Christianity’s greatest theologians,
  • an intact sterling silver reliquary,
  • and an original episcopal authentication document.

Such complete and well-preserved examples are increasingly scarce and are of exceptional interest to collectors of sacred art, ecclesiastical historians, and institutions specializing in Christian heritage.
