Reliquary with a Relic of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, Martyr

+ Certified Episcopal Document, 1844

Description of the Relic

This devotional object is an authentic 19th-century Catholic reliquary containing a relic of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, one of the most venerated early Christian martyrs. The relic is carefully mounted within a sterling silver oval reliquary, traditionally constructed for personal devotion or ecclesiastical use.

The interior is lined with textile backing, and the relic fragment is secured according to canonical norms, accompanied by a handwritten identification label bearing the saint’s name. The reverse is sealed with original red ecclesiastical wax impressed with the episcopal coat of arms and bound with silk threads, confirming that the reliquary has not been opened since its official authentication.

Dimensions:

  • 3.5 × 3.0 cm

Material:

  • Sterling silver reliquary
  • Textile interior
  • Original episcopal wax seal

This piece represents a genuine first-class devotional artifact, preserved in its original 19th-century condition.

Episcopal Authentication (1844)

The reliquary is accompanied by its original Latin authentication document, issued in 1844 by Archbishop Stephanus Missir, Archbishop of Irenopolis, acting under apostolic authority of the Holy See.

In the document, the archbishop solemnly attests that:

  • the relic was taken from an authenticated sacred source (ex authenticis locis extracta),
  • it was properly examined, recognized, and approved for public veneration,
  • it was lawfully enclosed in a reliquary and sealed with his official episcopal seal,
  • it may be exposed for devotion in churches, chapels, or private oratories.

Such documents were mandatory under canon law and are a key indicator of historical legitimacy and ecclesiastical provenance. Survival of both reliquary and document together is increasingly rare.

Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki

Saint Demetrius (late 3rd – early 4th century) is one of the Great Martyrs of the early Church and the principal patron saint of Thessaloniki. A Roman officer by rank, he openly confessed Christianity during the persecutions under Emperor Galerius.

According to tradition, Demetrius was imprisoned and ultimately martyred for his faith, becoming renowned for his courage, fidelity to Christ, and spiritual authority. His cult spread rapidly throughout both the Eastern and Western Churches, and he is especially revered in Byzantium, the Balkans, and medieval Europe.

Saint Demetrius is traditionally invoked as:

  • a protector of cities,
  • a defender of the faithful,
  • and a symbol of steadfast faith under persecution.

Relics of Saint Demetrius were historically considered objects of great spiritual power and were often reserved for churches, monasteries, or high-ranking clergy.

Significance

This reliquary represents a museum-level devotional artifact, combining:

  • a certified relic of a major early Christian martyr,
  • an intact 19th-century sterling silver reliquary,
  • and an original episcopal authentication document.

Such complete ensembles are highly sought after by collectors of sacred art, ecclesiastical history, and institutional religious heritage.
