Relics of Saint Polycarp of Smyrna, Bishop and Martyr

With Episcopal Authentication Document, 1872

Dimensions: 3 × 2.5 cm

This finely preserved reliquary contains ex ossibus (from the bones) relics of Saint Polycarp of Smyrna, one of the most revered martyrs of the early Christian Church. The relic is housed in an elegant oval metal reliquary, lined with traditional red fabric and secured with its original episcopal wax seal and silk cords, in full accordance with canonical norms of the 19th century.

The reliquary is accompanied by its original Instrumentum Authenticitatis, issued in 1872 by the diocesan authority. The document formally certifies the authenticity of the relic, confirms its extraction from a recognized sacred source, and authorizes its public veneration. Such documents were issued only after careful ecclesiastical examination and represent an essential element of provenance and legitimacy for sacred relics.

Saint Polycarp of Smyrna (c. 69 – 155 AD)

Saint Polycarp stands at the very heart of apostolic Christianity. He was Bishop of Smyrna (modern İzmir, Turkey) and a direct disciple of Saint John the Apostle, making him a living link between the Apostolic Age and the post-apostolic Church. His testimony is invaluable for understanding early Christian doctrine, liturgy, and episcopal succession.

Polycarp is best known for his martyrdom, recorded in The Martyrdom of Polycarp, one of the earliest surviving Christian martyr acts. When ordered to renounce Christ, he famously replied:

“Eighty and six years have I served Him, and He has done me no wrong. How then can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”

He was condemned to death by fire; according to tradition, the flames did not consume him, and he was ultimately put to death by the sword. His martyrdom became a model of steadfast faith and sacrificial witness for generations of Christians.

Saint Polycarp is venerated as:

  • Martyr and Confessor of the Faith
  • Apostolic Father
  • Witness of unbroken apostolic tradition

His feast day is celebrated on February 23.

The Episcopal Authentication (1872)

The accompanying document was issued by the Bishop of the Diocese of Tulle (France) in 1872, acting under canonical authority of the Catholic Church. Such bishops were entrusted with the strict regulation of relics, ensuring their authenticity, proper sealing, and lawful circulation for veneration.

The document confirms:

  • the identity of the saint,
  • the nature of the relic (ex ossibus),
  • the integrity of the seal,
  • and the Church’s authorization for devotional use.

Documents of this kind were never issued casually; they reflect the Church’s deep theological and legal care regarding relics, especially those of the Apostolic Fathers and early martyrs.
