Relic of the Bone Fragment of Saint Joannicius the Great (Ioannikios)
With Original Document of Authenticity — May 4, 1849
Size: 7 cm
A rare and venerable first-class relic (ex ossibus) of Saint Joannicius the Great, the renowned hermit and wonderworker of the early Byzantine era. The fragment of bone, carefully preserved and labeled S. Joannicii Magni Erem. (Saint Joannicius the Great, Hermit), is bound with red silk threads and secured by intact red episcopal wax seals — perfectly preserved for more than 175 years.
This sacred relic is accompanied by its original episcopal document of authentication, issued on May 4, 1849, by Aloysius Ferrari, Bishop of Modena, bearing his embossed seal and handwritten signature. The document confirms the authenticity and canonical sealing of the relic according to the decrees of the Holy See.
Saint Joannicius the Great (c. 752–846 AD) was a revered hermit and ascetic monk of Bithynia, celebrated for his deep humility, prophetic gifts, and countless miracles. Once a soldier in the Byzantine army, he renounced worldly life and dedicated himself entirely to God in the solitude of Mount Olympus in Asia Minor. His holiness drew disciples and inspired monastic communities across the Byzantine Empire.
This relic represents a profound connection to one of the greatest spiritual figures of Eastern monasticism — a man of prayer, wisdom, and miraculous power whose sanctity bridged the earthly and the divine.
✨ A rare, fully authenticated 1849 relic of Saint Joannicius the Great — the wonderworking hermit and ascetic of Bithynia, a luminous figure of early Byzantine holiness.
