Relic of Saint Anthony the Great, Abbot (St. Antony of Egypt)
Rome, 1957
Bone fragment with Jesuit postulator’s authentication document
A rare and important first-class relic (ex ossibus) — a bone fragment measuring 8 cm in length — of Saint Anthony the Great, also known as Anthony of Egypt or Anthony the Abbot, the Father of Christian Monasticism. The relic bears its original manuscript label “S. Antonii Mag. Abb.” (Sancti Antonii Magni Abbatis – “Saint Anthony the Great, Abbot”) and retains three red wax seals impressed with the IHS monogram of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), confirming its authenticity and canonical sealing.
The relic is accompanied by its original authentication document (authentica), issued in Rome in 1957 by the Postulator General of the Society of Jesus (Postulator Generalis S.J.), attesting that the relic was extracted from authentic sources and enclosed in a sealed reliquary for public veneration. The certificate bears the embossed seal and signature of the Jesuit Postulator, along with the traditional Jesuit emblem at the top.
Saint Anthony the Great (c. 251 – 356)
Saint Anthony the Great, also called Anthony of the Desert, is one of the most beloved and influential figures in Christian history, regarded as the founder of monasticism. Born in Egypt, he gave away his family’s wealth at the age of twenty and withdrew into the desert to live a life of asceticism, prayer, and solitude. His spiritual struggles and victories against temptation became legendary and inspired countless followers.
Disciples gathered around him, forming the first communities of monks. Anthony’s life, recorded by St. Athanasius of Alexandria, spread rapidly throughout the Christian world and became a model of holiness and renunciation. He was renowned for his wisdom, miracles, and spiritual discernment, and he was sought out by emperors and peasants alike for counsel.
St. Anthony died at the age of 105, leaving behind a profound spiritual legacy that shaped both Eastern and Western monastic traditions. His symbol, the Tau Cross, and his association with healing and protection from diseases (especially ergotism, or “St. Anthony’s Fire”) made him one of the most venerated saints in Christendom.
