Relic of Saint Anthony of Padua, Confessor of the Church

An exceptional 19th-century authenticated relic of Saint Anthony of Padua, preserved in its original theca and accompanied by an official ecclesiastical document bearing seal and signature.

The sacred particle is reverently enclosed in a traditional round brass theca measuring 4 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in thickness, protected under glass. Insert – 4.5 cm x 7.5 cm. The relic rests upon a silk ground and is identified by the original Latin cedula inscribed “S. Antonii Pat. C.” (Sancti Antonii Patavini Confessoris). The reverse retains its intact red wax episcopal seal, confirming canonical closure.

The relic is accompanied by its original authentication document (authentica), issued and sealed in 1883. The document bears the signature and seal of Victor Augustus Isidorus Cardinal Deschamps, Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium, attesting to the authenticity and proper ecclesiastical recognition of the sacred remains.

Saint Anthony of Padua (1195–1231)

Saint Anthony, born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, is one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic Church. Originally an Augustinian canon, he later joined the Franciscan Order after being deeply moved by the martyrdom of Franciscan missionaries in Morocco.

Renowned for his extraordinary preaching, profound theological knowledge, and deep humility, he became known as the “Evangelical Doctor.” His sermons drew immense crowds throughout Italy and France, and numerous miracles were attributed to his intercession during his lifetime.

Though often invoked today as the patron saint of lost objects, Saint Anthony’s historical importance is far greater. He was a powerful defender of orthodox doctrine, a protector of the poor, and a model of Franciscan poverty and obedience. His theological brilliance led Pope Gregory IX to call him the “Ark of the Testament,” and in 1946 he was declared a Doctor of the Church.

His incorrupt tongue, discovered during the translation of his remains, has long been regarded as a sign of the sanctity of his preaching ministry.

Victor Auguste Isidore Cardinal Deschamps (1810–1883)

The document accompanying this relic was issued under the authority of Cardinal Victor-Auguste-Isidore Deschamps, Archbishop of Mechelen and Primate of Belgium. A distinguished Redemptorist theologian and influential churchman of the 19th century, Deschamps played a significant role in the First Vatican Council (1869–1870), particularly in discussions concerning papal infallibility.

Appointed Archbishop of Mechelen in 1865 and created Cardinal in 1875, he was known for his intellectual rigor, pastoral care, and defense of Catholic doctrine during a time of intense political and ideological upheaval in Europe.

His signature and episcopal seal on the authentica provide strong historical and canonical context for the relic, situating it within the formal processes of ecclesiastical authentication of the period.

This relic represents a deeply devotional and historically significant sacred object, uniting Franciscan spirituality, 19th-century ecclesiastical tradition, and the enduring veneration of one of Christianity’s most universally beloved saints.
