Out of stockRelic of Saint Ferdinand III of Castile, King of Castile and León
+ Episcopal Certificate, 1865
Historical note:
Saint Ferdinand III was King of Castile and León (Spain). He was not King of France. The Latin label “S. Ferdinandi Regis” visible in the reliquary corresponds to this Spanish saint-king.
This devotional object contains a bone relic (ex ossibus) of Saint Ferdinand III of Castile (Sanctus Ferdinandus III, Rex Castellae et Legionis), one of the most important royal saints of medieval Christian Europe.
The relic is housed in a round metal reliquary with a glass front, measuring 4 cm in diameter. The relic fragment is mounted on a traditional textile backing and identified by an original handwritten Latin label reading “S. Ferdinandi Regis”.
The reverse of the reliquary is secured with its original red episcopal wax seal, bearing the coat of arms of the issuing bishop. The intact seal confirms that the reliquary has not been opened since its official ecclesiastical authentication. The reliquary remains complete and preserved in canonical condition.
Episcopal Certificate (1865)
The relic is accompanied by its original Latin certificate of authenticity, dated 1865, issued in accordance with the norms established by the Council of Trent for the recognition and public veneration of sacred relics.
The document formally attests that:
The certificate bears the printed episcopal coat of arms, embossed seal, date, and original signatures, fully corresponding to the wax seal on the reliquary itself.
The Issuing Bishop
The certificate was issued under the authority of Engelbert Sterckx (Engelbertus Sterckx).
Cardinal Sterckx was widely respected for his strict adherence to canonical regulations and for ensuring the integrity of Catholic devotional objects. His involvement provides strong ecclesiastical and historical credibility to this relic and its documentation.
Saint Ferdinand III of Castile (1199–1252)
Saint Ferdinand III is revered as the ideal model of a Christian king.
He is especially remembered for:
Canonized in 1671, Saint Ferdinand became a symbol of righteous kingship, combining political authority with deep religious faith. His relics were venerated throughout Spain and Catholic Europe, particularly during the 17th–19th centuries.
Significance
This ensemble — consisting of the reliquary, its intact episcopal wax seal, and the matching episcopal certificate dated 1865 — represents a well-documented and canonically authenticated 19th-century Catholic relic.
