Museum-Level Reliquary with Multiple Major Relics of the Holy Family (St. Anne, St. Joseph, St. Elizabeth, St. Zechariah) + True Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ

+ Documented and Authenticated in 1834

Description of the Reliquary

This exceptional 19th-century Catholic reliquary, crafted in sterling silver, contains an extraordinary assemblage of major Christian relics, centered around a fragment of the True Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Lignum Crucis). The reliquary is oval in form and measures 7 × 5 cm, reflecting refined ecclesiastical metalwork typical of high devotional objects produced for clergy or private oratories.

Inside, the relics are carefully mounted on silk and framed with fine silver wirework. Each relic is identified by a handwritten Latin label, consistent with 19th-century Roman practice. The reverse is sealed with original red wax episcopal seals and silk threads, guaranteeing the integrity and authenticity of the contents.

Relics Contained

This reliquary holds a rare theological grouping of relics intimately connected to the life of Christ:

  • Relic of the True Cross (S. Crucis D.N.J.C.)
A fragment traditionally believed to come from the Cross upon which Jesus Christ was crucified. Such relics were among the most venerated in all of Christendom and were distributed only under strict ecclesiastical control.
  • St. Anne (S. Annae Mat. B.M.)
Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandmother of Jesus Christ. St. Anne is venerated as a model of faith, motherhood, and perseverance.
  • St. Joseph (S. Joseph Spons. B.M.)
Spouse of the Virgin Mary and foster father of Jesus. Patron saint of the Universal Church, families, and workers.
  • St. Elizabeth (S. Elisabeth Mat. S. Ioan. Bap.)
Mother of St. John the Baptist and kinswoman of the Virgin Mary, remembered for her righteousness and humility.
  • St. Zechariah (S. Zachariae Pat. S. Ioan. Bap.)
Father of St. John the Baptist and priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, associated with prophecy and divine obedience.

The presence of these relics together forms a powerful devotional ensemble focused on Christ’s Incarnation, Passion, and sacred family lineage.

Episcopal Authentication (1834)

The accompanying authenticity document (Authentica) was issued in Rome in 1834 and formally certifies the relics. It was signed and sealed by Cardinal Placidus Zurla, O.S.B. Cam., a highly respected churchman of his time.

Cardinal Placidus Zurla (1769–1834)

  • Member of the Camaldolese Order of St. Benedict
  • Cardinal-Priest of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (one of Rome’s most important churches for relics of the Passion)
  • Renowned scholar, Vatican librarian, and senior ecclesiastical authority
  • Frequently entrusted with the authentication and distribution of major relics

His seal and signature confirm that the relics were:

  • Properly examined
  • Taken from authenticated sources
  • Sealed according to canonical law
  • Authorized for public or private veneration

Such documentation places the reliquary firmly within official Roman ecclesiastical tradition.
