Fragment of the Rope of the Flagellation of Our Lord Jesus Christ

+ Authentication Document, Issued in 1890

Type: Relic of the Passion of Christ

Reliquary Size: Diameter 3.5 cm

Date of Authentication: 1890

Description

This sacred relic consists of a small fragment traditionally identified as part of the rope used in the Flagellation of Our Lord Jesus Christ, one of the central events of the Passion preceding the Crucifixion. The relic is carefully mounted in a round metal reliquary, protected under glass and set against a red textile background, in accordance with traditional Catholic reliquary practice.

The relic is secured with silk threads and sealed on the reverse with red ecclesiastical wax, bearing an episcopal seal, ensuring its integrity and authenticity. Such Passion relics have always held a particularly high place in Christian devotion, as they are directly associated with the physical suffering endured by Christ for the redemption of humanity.

Authentication Document

The relic is accompanied by its original official ecclesiastical authentication document, issued in 1890 and written in Latin. The document confirms the authenticity of the relic and authorizes its veneration according to the norms of the Catholic Church.

The document was authenticated and signed by Nicolaus Chilardi, who is identified in the text as:

  • Archbishop by the grace of God and the Apostolic See
  • A domestic prelate of Pope Leo XIII
  • An official empowered to authenticate and distribute sacred relics

The document bears his handwritten signature and official seal, affirming that the relic was examined, properly enclosed, sealed, and approved for public veneration, with strict prohibition against its sale or unauthorized transfer, in accordance with canon law.

About the Relic of the Flagellation Rope

Relics connected to the Flagellation of Christ are among the most venerated Passion relics in Christian tradition. The Flagellation represents Christ’s voluntary acceptance of suffering, humility, and obedience to the will of God. Devotion to such relics has historically been associated with meditation on Christ’s Passion, penitence, and deep spiritual contemplation.

Fragments attributed to instruments of the Passion—such as the Cross, nails, scourges, or ropes—were carefully preserved, divided, and distributed under strict ecclesiastical supervision, especially from Late Antiquity through the 19th century.
